Rooted in folklore and rural life, Mark’s woodcarvings reflect his skill and commitment to transforming the local into a global visual language.

The line, which is Mark’s key element, plays a crucial role in the theatrical impact of his work. Through gestural lines that vary in strength and thickness, he creates movement, rhythm, and a sense of animation. These energetic, open lines allow the figure and surrounding space to interact fluidly, evoking the effect of figures moving across space, much like a performance. The spontaneity of his line further adds immediacy to the actions depicted.

Mark’s search for harmony between subject and technique has shaped his artistic practice, leading him from smooth acrylic surfaces to richly textured, vividly coloured woodcarvings, and eventually to bronze sculpture from 2019 onwards. This exploration also led him to pyrography in 2017, a medium he values for its irreversibility and raw, elemental line quality, both of which demand complete presence and align with his focus on the human body.
