Anagama fired Stoneware

An Anagama is a Japanese term meaning "Cave kiln". Fueled with a continuous supply of casuarina wood, thrown and consumed very rapidly in the kiln. Firing occurs round the clock until the temperatures reach 1300°C and sustained.

The length of the firing was about 72 hours. Wood ash settle on the pieces during the firing, and the complex interaction between flame, ash, and the minerals of the clay body forms a natural ash glaze.

BLUE VASES have my distinctive bold painting with a blue glaze on large wheel thrown pots.  These works fired within the kiln distinctly affect the appearance, as one of them was closer to the firebox and  received heavy coats of ash and is even immersed in embers.

While loading the kiln I imagined the flame path as it rushes through the kiln, and used this sense to 'paint the pieces with fire'. This process of a week-long firing and cooling adds value to pots and as such has a high value.
